A new study just dropped that has the Alzheimer’s research world buzzing.
And it’s about... creatine.
Published this past week in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions, the pilot study tracked 20 participants with diagnosed Alzheimer’s over eight weeks. Each participant was given 20 grams of creatine a day.
The result? An 11% increase in brain creatine levels and noticeable improvements in memory, attention, and processing speed.
There’s more to the story:
5.1% improvement in oral reading
12.1% improvement in working memory
7.2% improvement in attention control
7.4% improvement in fluid cognition
4.4% increase in total cognition
Researchers believe that creatine's role in cellular energy production could counteract the energy deficits observed in Alzheimer's-affected brains.
If creatine continues to show promise, the future of Alzheimer’s care might include something you can pick up at your local supplement store.
A study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that daily supplementation with vitamin D3 can slow the shortening of telomeres—the protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes that naturally erode as we age. This erosion is associated with aging and an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart conditions.
Participants in the study who took 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily over four years experienced significantly less telomere shortening compared to those who took a placebo, effectively delaying biological aging.
A quick breakdown of the results:
Daily vitamin D3 supplements helped preserve telomere length over four years.
Participants effectively held onto the equivalent of three extra years of cellular youth.
Omega-3s, on the other hand, didn’t move the needle on telomere health.
The findings stem from the VITAL (VITamin D and OmegA-3 TriaL) study, a large-scale, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving over 1,000 participants aged 50 and above. The study adds to the growing body of evidence suggesting that vitamin D plays a vital role in maintaining cellular health and potentially slowing the aging process.
