FROM THE CLINIC
SEED OILS MAY TURBOCHARGE TRIPLE-NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER
Turns out, what's in your pantry might have more to do with cancer than we thoughtāespecially if you're a fan of seed oils.
A new study led by researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine found that linoleic acidāa type of omega-6 fatty acid found in things like soybean oil, safflower oil, pork, and eggsācan actually turbocharge the growth of a tough-to-treat form of breast cancer known as triple-negative.
According to the studyās senior author, Dr. John Blenis, this discovery not only connects the dots between diet and cancer, but also opens the door to personalized nutrition strategiesābasically, what you eat could really matter if you're at risk.
Until now, though, the science on omega-6 fats and cancer has been a bit of a mixed bagālots of theories, but not a lot of hard proof. This new study might be the breakthrough we've been waiting for, finally tying a common nutrient to a specific biological process in cancer development.

DEEP DIVE SESSION
BLUE ZONE BREAKDOWN
The concept of Blue Zonesāregions where people live significantly longer and healthier livesāhas captured the cultural zeitgeist like a Goop-endorsed mushroom tonic. Shouts to you, Gwyneth.
Thanks to Netflixās docuseries "Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones", longevity enthusiasts are trading in their McMansions and packing their bags for pockets of the planet where aging defies the limits.
Time for a breakdownā¦
So, What Are Blue Zones?
Blue Zones are regions where people consistently live to 100 and beyond, seemingly without trying. There are five original Blue Zones, identified by journalist and researcher Dan Buettner:
Okinawa, Japan ā Home to some of the worldās longest-living women.
Sardinia, Italy ā The island where old men have the best odds of reaching 100 (and the best wine to celebrate it).
Ikaria, Greece ā Where people forget to dieā¦ and also forget what time it is.
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica ā A plant-based diet and strong community bonds fuel longevity here.
Loma Linda, California ā A community of Seventh-day Adventists who mix prayer with plant-based meals and keep confusing the rest of the U.S.
And a brief historical timeline:
2004: Dan Buettner partners with National Geographic and demographers to identify areas with high centenarian concentrations.
2005: First National Geographic article drops. Wellness influencers collectively lose their minds.
2008: The Blue Zones book is released. It becomes a New York Times bestseller and a staple on every almond-milk-splashed nightstand.
2023: Netflix debuts Live to 100, taking blue zones to the mainstream.
ā° Fast-forward to todayā¦
As wealthy biohackers and health tourists descend on Sardinia and Ikaria, locals are understandably... annoyed.
Airbnb prices have skyrocketed, and the once-sleepy towns are now bustling with wellness retreats offering āsardonic spiritual alignment.ā Expats chasing immortality are turning villages into vegan juice co-ops.
The question you might be asking is - ācan I just re-create the blue zone lifestyle at home?ā
Follow the Power 9 Blue Zone principles, and youāll be on your way.
Move Naturally ā Regular, low-intensity activity built into daily life (walking, gardening, chores).
Hara Hachi Bu ā Eat until 80% full to avoid overeating.
Plant Slant ā Mostly plant-based diet, with beans as a staple; little meat.
Wine @ 5 ā Moderate alcohol (esp. red wine) enjoyed socially and with food.
Purpose ā Strong sense of life purpose (ikigai, plan de vida).
Downshift ā Daily routines to reduce stress (naps, prayer, quiet time).
Belong ā Regular participation in a faith-based or spiritual community.
Loved Ones First ā Family-first mindset; care for elders, strong family bonds.
Right Tribe ā Close-knit, supportive social circles that promote healthy behaviors.
Blue Zones have become more than just placesātheyāre a movement, a brand, a booming micro-economy.
But letās not forget the irony: the people actually living to 100 arenāt obsessing over living to 100. Theyāre laughing with friends, walking up hills, and eating simple foods straight from the earth.
Maybe thatās the secret after all.
