Here's a sentence you don't read often: a supplement may be shortening lifespans.

A new study published in the journal Aging, drawing on health and genetic data from over 270,000 people in the UK Biobank, found that men with genetically higher levels of tyrosine in their blood appeared to live nearly one year less on average. Women showed no statistically clear association.

Tyrosine is an amino acid - one of the building blocks your body uses to make proteins, as well as key brain chemicals like dopamine and adrenaline, the chemicals that control focus, drive, and the body's stress response. It's found naturally in eggs, meat, dairy, and soy. It's also widely sold as a standalone supplement for mental focus and cognitive performance under pressure.

  • Researchers used Mendelian randomization - a technique that uses inherited genetic differences to estimate whether a biological factor directly influences a health outcome, rather than just correlating with it

  • Both tyrosine and its precursor phenylalanine initially appeared linked to shorter lifespan

  • After accounting for the overlapping effects between the two, only tyrosine retained a statistically significant association

  • In men, genetically higher tyrosine was linked to a lifespan reduction of approximately 0.9 years
