Hello. It's September 23.

Turns out your biological clock is more flexible than most people think. A new study put older adults on an adjusted diet for just four weeks - changing the balance of fat, carbs, and animal protein - and measured their epigenetic age before and after. It reversed. No drugs. No supplements. Just food.

The rundown:

  • Longevity biotech crossed $30bn in cumulative investment. A new report predicts the first longevity drugs within a decade.

  • REM sleep protects health independently of total sleep time - and most people aren't tracking it

  • Muscle health - not body weight - may be the real dementia risk factor

  • Chronic disease costs the US $3.7 trillion per year. The economic case for longevity research has never been clearer.

Let's get to it. 👇

Declining levels of a brain protein called Menin may be a key driver of aging - lower Menin levels in mice were linked to inflammation, cognitive decline, weaker bones, and thinner skin. Restoring Menin reversed several of those changes. One of the cleaner demonstrations of a single molecular target reversing multiple aging symptoms at once. ScienceDaily

Muscle loss - not body weight - is the stronger predictor of dementia risk - lower muscle mass was associated with higher dementia risk, while obesity showed inconsistent patterns depending on when in life it was measured. The number on the scale may matter less than whether you're maintaining muscle as you age. Earth.com

Cancer rates are rising in adults under 55, and faster biological aging may partly explain why - people from more recent generations show accelerated epigenetic aging compared to earlier generations at the same chronological age. Ultra-processed food, chronic stress, sleep disruption and environmental exposures are among the suspected drivers. ScienceDaily

Chronic disease costs the US $3.7 trillion per year - nearly 20% of GDP - making longevity research the most powerful economic lever governments aren't discussing - when indirect productivity losses are included, the burden of age-related disease exceeds the US defence budget by a factor of four. A decades-long Finnish study found that men with healthier cardiovascular markers in their 40s were significantly less likely to be frail in old age - the choices you make for your heart at midlife are the strongest predictors of physical resilience decades later. Frailty is not random. It is cumulative. Earth.com

FROM THE CLINIC

Your Biological Age Responds to Food. Faster Than You Think.

Most longevity interventions take months to show up in measurable biology. This one didn't.

Older adults who adjusted the balance of fat, carbohydrates, and animal protein in their diet showed measurable signs of reduced biological age in just four weeks. Researchers measured using epigenetic clocks - DNA methylation-based tools that track how cells are aging at the molecular level - before and after. No calorie restriction. No supplements. Just a shift in macronutrient ratios.

The breakdown:

  • Participants adjusted the proportions of fat, carbs, and animal protein in their existing eating pattern

  • Biological age measured via DNA methylation analysis before and after four weeks

  • Measurable epigenetic age reduction after just four weeks

  • Strongest result: omnivorous diet with lower fat content

What this doesn't tell us: which specific ratio is optimal long-term, or whether the benefit persists. What it does: biological age is not a fixed number. It responds to what you eat, measurably, within a timeframe that matters in a single person's life.

If last week's Maria Branyas story showed that the world's oldest person credited a balanced Mediterranean-style diet - this is the quantitative mechanism behind that pattern.

Your Recovery System May Be a Longevity Blind Spot

Longevity routines tend to focus on inputs: supplements, workouts, biomarkers and sleep scores. But your ability to shift out of stress and into recovery matters, too.

Nuropod uses non-invasive auricular vagus nerve stimulation to support the autonomic processes behind calm, sleep and recovery. Wear it at the ear for 15-60 minutes while reading, working or winding down, with no chemical or surgical intervention.

In studies, sleep improved 30%, tiredness fell 48% and HRV increased 18%.* Backed by 60+ completed studies, 150+ research partners and 5M+ user sessions. Try it with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

REM Sleep Protects Health in Ways That Sleep Duration Doesn't

Most sleep advice focuses on one number: hours. Get your seven. Get your eight.

New research published September 18 suggests that frame is incomplete. REM sleep - the phase associated with dreaming, memory consolidation, and emotional processing - protects health in ways that sleep duration alone doesn't capture. Two people can get identical hours and experience meaningfully different biological outcomes based on how much REM they're actually getting.

Why REM matters specifically:

  • The brain's glymphatic system - which clears metabolic waste including amyloid and tau proteins - is most active during deep and REM sleep

  • Memory consolidation depends heavily on REM cycles

  • Emotional regulation and stress-response calibration happen during REM - poor REM is linked to anxiety and cognitive decline independently of total sleep time

What disrupts REM: alcohol (even moderate amounts suppress it in the first half of the night), late eating, irregular sleep schedules, caffeine within 6-8 hours of bed. Getting 7 hours with disrupted REM architecture is not the same as 7 solid hours.

Wearables that track sleep stages (Oura, Eight Sleep, WHOOP) give you more signal than a basic hours tracker. Worth using.

$30 Billion Into Longevity. First Drugs Predicted by 2035. 📊

Longevity.Technology published its annual investment report this week. The numbers mark a genuine inflection in how capital is treating this field.

Global longevity biotech investment hit a record $18.4 billion in 2025 - up from $4.7 billion in 2024. That's nearly a 4x increase in a single year. With $12.1 billion already deployed through the first eight months of 2026, the cumulative total across recent years has now cleared $30 billion. The report forecasts a $617 billion market by 2045.

The more significant number is the timeline prediction: the first gerotherapeutic drug - one designed to slow or reverse the aging process itself, hitting multiple age-related diseases simultaneously - is expected to win regulatory approval within a decade.

This is not pure speculation. The precedent is already forming. Semaglutide's 20% reduction in heart attacks, strokes, and cardiovascular death in patients with obesity and heart disease has now been approved by UK regulators - the first time a drug has won approval for slowing a biological consequence of aging across multiple disease domains at once. Regulators already said yes to something that looks like a longevity drug.

What the $30bn tells you: institutional capital has decided this category is investable. The question is no longer whether longevity drugs will exist. It's which ones reach market first and at what price.

The Case Against Sugar

Gary Taubes

This week we learned that macronutrient ratios measurably affect biological age in four weeks. One ingredient group keeps showing up in the data. Taubes spent years investigating the science and industry politics behind sugar - and the case he builds is difficult to dismiss. Investigative journalism, not a diet book. More useful for that reason.
